Early on, we spent a while reading reviews of other reciprocating sanding pens. The ratings first, then the ones long enough to say why — where someone describes what they actually ended up doing with the tool. We read a lot of them. This one we didn't forget:

"I purchased extra head sets for each sandpaper grit, this way just change the head with preloaded grit papers then changing the paper all the time on 1 set of heads."

That isn't a modification. It's a customer paying to get around one of the tool's design decisions.

The pen ships with one set of heads and sandpaper sold separately by grit, so moving from 240 to 400 means peeling off what's there, aligning a new sheet and pressing it down. This buyer decided it was worth owning several sets of heads instead, keeping one grit loaded on each and swapping the head rather than the paper.

That is most of how NeoSander's Color-Coded System works. The reviewer had worked out half of it independently, and paid for it. The half that couldn't be bought is the reason this system exists.

One Head, a Stack of Paper

The structure is visible on any product page in this category: the heads come as a single set, while the sandpaper is sold as separate items, one per grit — 180, 240, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500. The head is the equipment, the paper is the consumable, and changing grit means changing paper.

The sheets accumulate as you go. Grits two steps apart look identical under bench light, so a few rounds in you can't tell the ones you set aside from each other without sanding a corner to find out.

And the sheet you peel off doesn't go back the way it came off. It stretches coming loose, so pressing it down again leaves a ripple or a lifted corner somewhere — and a sheet that isn't flat doesn't sand flat: the ripple sits proud and takes more pressure than the paper beside it, so the area around it comes out uneven. That alone keeps it off the next part. The wear is beside the point by then — it's been used, not used up, but the bite is off it too. So you reach for a new sheet, and the old one stays on the bench — one for every time you changed grit, and none of them close to worn out.

That's the structure as it appears on a product page. On a bench it looks like this:

You've got the part in your other hand, turned toward the lamp at the one angle where the support mark actually shows. It took a few seconds to find that angle. The head is working, the pressure is right, and the mark is going.

Then it's time for the next grit up.

You put the part down. You look at the bench. Somewhere in what's on it is the sheet you want, or the head you want, and for a second or two you're not sanding, you're sorting. Then you pick the part back up and go looking for that angle again.

Setting the part down is unavoidable — that's just the work. Not knowing what you've picked up isn't.

The Limits of a Cheaper Fix

Hook-and-loop is the standard on larger sanders, and the obvious thing to reach for. It also puts a compressible layer between the head and the workpiece. On a tabletop that doesn't matter. On a tool with a 0.6–1.8 mm stroke, working an edge that isn't supposed to end up rounded, it does. That is why detail sanding has settled on adhesive-backed paper instead.

Adhesive is the right answer for the sanding itself: it sits flat, adds no height, transfers the motion directly, and holds an edge square. What it isn't good at is coming off and going back on. You can re-stick a sheet, but by then the abrasive is worn and the exposed adhesive has picked up dust and oil, so what you're putting back is a sheet you're no longer sure about — and now that's a decision you have to make, mid-part.

So the paper side has nowhere left to go.

Which leaves the head. The first reviewer's answer was to buy more of them: one grit loaded on each, swap the head instead of the sheet. It works, and it costs extra — and eight sets of grey heads on a bench are still eight grey heads.

The obvious fix for that is to label them, and the category already does: competing storage cases give each grit its own slot, and buyers say so approvingly in reviews. But a case organizes the paper while it's in the case. It doesn't help at the moment you're holding a head, and it only works at all if everything goes back in the right slot, every time.

One Grit, One Color

NeoSander's full set is eight head shapes in eight grits — sixty-four heads in total. Each one carries a single grit, and the paper stays where it is.

Each grit also has its own color. The heads are molded in clear PC, so the color reads out of the part itself rather than off a printed surface, and the storage tray carries the same color beside the grit number.

This is the half the reviewer couldn't buy. Eight sets of heads solves the peeling, but it does nothing for the moment three minutes later when you reach for one and can't tell which is which. The color isn't decoration — it's the only part of the system that answers a question, and it's a question you actually stop to ask: which grit is this one?

Recognizing, Not Remembering

That question doesn't come up while the heads are sitting in the tray. It comes up with one already in your hand.

That's the difference color makes, and it's a smaller difference than it sounds. Reaching for the green one is something you see. Remembering that the third one along is 800 is something you retrieve. The first costs you nothing you were already using. The second takes a little out of it.

Which is why we weren't the ones who thought of it. Polishing abrasives have been color-coded by grade for years, and so have nail buffers — different trades, no connection between them, the same answer. What they have in common is the working posture: eyes close to the work, hands already busy, and nobody is able to afford looking away to read a number.

The reason it never reached a detail sander isn't that nobody thought of it. It's that there was nothing to color. A single head is 240 today and 800 tomorrow; the grit isn't a property of the head, only of whatever is stuck to it this afternoon. There's nothing for it to tell you.

A head that only ever carries one grit can finally tell you what it is. Color is how it tells you.

It's the same conclusion the reviewer at the top of this piece reached, arrived at independently and from the other side. One of them worked it out and built it himself, one head at a time. The other opened a box and found it already done.

Neither of them was buying a faster tool. They were buying a shorter list of things to keep track of.

Sanding is the part you chose to do. It's the step between the thing you made and the thing you wanted, and it's the one people will actually run a thumb over. The peeling, the sorting, the remembering — none of that was ever the point.

Eight colors don't make the sanding better. They just keep the rest of it out of your way.
